What is your opinion on the Nikon D3000 camera?

I made a deal with my dad; If I get straight A’s from the time school starts to the beginning of January, he would buy me a nice camera. I really like the Nikon D3000, but I want your opinion on it. Thanks!

The D3000 is a nice but very basic DSLR. There are a lot of features it lacks. In my opinion you’d be wise to look at the Pentax K-x. Here are its features:

    1) Live View.
    2) HD Video.
    3) Double/multiple exposure capability.
    4) An in camera focusing motor.
    5) In camera Image Stabilization (IS).

The D3000 has NONE of those features. None.

At B&H – http://www.bhphotovideo.com – the D3000 is $549.95 and the Pentax K-x is $513.99. So you could pay $35.96 MORE for the D3000 and get LESS or you could pay $35.96 LESS for the Pentax K-x and get MORE. Your dad will probably agree the Pentax K-x is the more logical choice.

Pentax has been around for about 90 years and has always been a respected lens maker. Since the K-x uses the same mount as the venerable K1000 35mm film camera of 1975 there are hundreds of K-mount lenses available. Yes there are limitations when using a 35 year old manual focus lens but they can be used – and they’ll be an IS lens thanks to the in camera IS of the K-x. An auto focus lens for the Pentax ZX-60 will auto focus on the K-x and be an IS lens.

Since Nikon didn’t put a focusing motor in the D3000 body, you have to buy Nikon AF-I or AF-S lenses if you want auto focus. If you want IS (Nikon calls it VR) then you have to pay for it every time you buy a VR lens – and not every Nikon lens has VR.

Good luck with getting straight A’s. You can do it.

The D3000 is a nice entry-level DSLR that’s capable, in experienced hands, of great photos.

If this is your first time owning a DSLR, a Nikon D3000 is a well capable starter camera. It will ultimately depend on what you will use the camera for. If HD video and live view or quick shooting abilities isn’t important then this will be a great camera. If you want to evolve into a photographer, then I would suggest looking at a D5000 or the better acclaimed D90 with the AF motor. The reason for this is you were interested in buying AF lenses you will need to get a D90. IT ultimately depends on your usage of the camera.
